Desom “back in the game”
When it comes to crémant, Caves Desom are true experts in Luxembourg. In an interview, Marc Desom shares insights about their current products and their return to the international competition scene.
After a short break, Caves Desom will be back in April 2026 at the Concours National des Crémants de France et de Luxembourg, whose 35th edition will take place along the Luxembourg Moselle. Already awarded several gold medals in the past, the winery had found less motivation to participate in recent years — but now aims to prove itself once again on the international stage.
Desom’s crémants are the flagship of the estate, which was among the first in Luxembourg in the early 1990s to produce sparkling wines under the “Crémant de Luxembourg” label. “We’ve invested heavily in the storage and production of our crémants and are very satisfied with the growth in sales,” says Marc Desom, who runs the family estate. Each cuvée carries its own signature, a distinct DNA defined by its blend of grape varieties. While other producers rely on reserve wines from previous vintages, Caves Desom sticks to the current vintage, ensuring the bright, fruity profile that has become their hallmark.
Their base wines are made from Burgundy grape varieties, a deliberate contrast to other crémants that lean more toward the Riesling style. Even though the sparkling wines from the 2025 harvest won’t yet be presented at the next competition, Marc Desom sees great potential in them: “The parameters are excellent, the acidity is perfect, and the health of the vines was remarkably good despite all the rain.”
